20 Commuters Perish in Highway Collision in Yobe State

A ghastly motor accident in Yobe State claimed no less than 20 lives on Monday.

This was according to the Federal Road Safety Commission who said that the accident occurred seven kilometres from Potiskum on the Kano-Maiduguri highway.

The FRSC Sector Commander in Yobe, Mr. Shehu Umar, confirmed the accident, saying that the accident occurred at about when a bus rammed into a truck and killed all the 20 occupants in the bus.

“You know due to the security challenge in Potiskum, we were forced to suspend operations in the area and we could not offer rescue services,” he said.

The sector commander said that the accident could have been caused by over-speeding.

He, however, observed that “over-speeding and reckless driving” had been responsible for many accidents on the road.

The driver of the18-seater bus coming from Kano was speeding to beat the 6 p.m. curfew in Potiskum, due to the current security crisis in the area.

Sources said that in the process, the bus rammed into a truck belonging to a construction company, killing all the passengers and the driver.

The suspension of operations by the FRSC in Yobe has left victims of road accidents in the state at the mercy of good Samaritans.
