The federal government is concluding plans to evacuate over 400 Nigerians from South Africa arising from the growing xenophobic attacks unleashed on foreigners resident in that country.
The evacuation plan SHARPEDGENews learnt is gaining momentum arising from the latest attacks on Nigerians and other African nationals on Sunday as they demand that foreign nationals must leave that country.
Following the unabated attacks in that country which has caused Nigerians to seek hiding place, the Nigerian Mission in South Africa, has said that no fewer than 400 Nigerians have indicate their resolve to return to Nigeria.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), confirmed the development through its Nigeria Consul General in Johannesburg, Mr. Godwin Adama, who made the disclosure through a telephone conversation.
According to him, a private airline operator, Air peace had to provide the service had offered to evacuate Nigerians because of the attacks.
While admitting that 400 Nigerians have registered and signified interest to relocate home, more are on their way to register.
This corroborated by the Nigerian High Commissioner, Mr. Kabiru Bala, in that country, who said more Nigerians have willing to return home on Wednesday.
He said: “We are documenting them. Those without travels documents shall be provided with emergency travel certificates.
He however said that in diplomatic circles, relevant agencies’ procedures and protocol must be informed and be ready to receive the returness for settlement, proper rehabilitation and quick adjustment to the society.
Meanwhile, an NGO, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), has demanded for $10 billion as compensation for Nigerians and others who suffered in the various attacks. The advocacy group urged the Attorney General of the Federation to push for the compensation.
