The Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) Commission has appointed former President Olusegun Obasanjo as the Head of its 250-member Election Observer Mission to Ghana for the December 7, 2012 general election.
It also announced that Ghanaian former President, John Kuffuor, will head its 150-member team to observe Sierra Leone’s general election scheduled for tomorrow.
In a statement yesterday, ECOWAS said both teams comprise of representatives of various segments of the West African society, who would carefully observe the conduct of the presidential, legislative and local elections in both countries.
Their reports are expected to contribute to the deepening of democratic culture in the countries.
The commission added that the objective of the two missions, which were dispatched under the regional instruments relating to the conduct of elections, is to help entrench a culture of transparent and credible elections that will contribute to the promotion of regional peace and stability.
