PRESIDENT Goodluck E. Jonathan on Sunday made an unscheduled visit to the ancient city of Kano, the site of
Friday’s coordinated strings of attacks that left over 150 people dead, including TV journalist Enenche Akogwu who worked with Lagos-based Channels TV network until he was shot and killed at one of the locations of the attacks.
The president visited the city as the residents continue to come to grips with the criminal assault executed by the evil sect known to the public as Boko Haram, a group that went further to release a rambling, incoherent statement on Sunday to justify yet another of their unending spate of mindless killing of innocent people of every background imaginable.
Sounding tougher than he did on previous occasions involving similar acts of terror, President Jonathan, who paid a condolence visit to the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero in his palace, said that the evil perpetrators will ultimately be crushed by his government. He asked the public to be at alert and to help provide useful information in this regard.
“The people doing this are not spirits,” Dr. Jonathan said. “They are among us. I seek the cooperation of all towards getting those involved in the havoc arrested. I assure Nigerians that the government will intensify its security in Kano and all over the country to unravel the misery behind this act.
“What is good for us as a nation is to look at our neighbors, to know what they do to enable us fish out these miscreants because if we don’t, one day, it may be against us. We will not rest until these terrorists are wiped out.”
“Nigerians should do everything possible to make sure that miscreants in our midst are immediately reported to security agents. It is the responsibility of all Nigerians to fight militancy.
Condemning the criminal elements who visited such horror on the people of Kano, the Emir of Kano, who received President Jonathan in his palace, was moved to tears as he appealed to the president to do all in his power to ensure that a sense of security is maintained across Nigeria. He appealed for the installation of the adequate security
The president assured the Emir of Kano of his government’s readiness to ensure the safety of lives and property in Kano and in the country at large. “Any dangerous attack on any community is an attack on Nigerians. Some years back, none of us will believe that Nigeria will be involved in suicide bombing mission.”
Despites Mr. Jonathan’s assurances, suspected terrorists continue to carry out their satanic acts with dare-devil zealotry. On Sunday morning in Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area of Bauchi State, 10 civilians, along with three security personnel, were killed by suspected members of Boko Haram. The security personnel included a Divisional Police Officer and two Lance Coporals of the Nigerian Army.
Some of the victims met their death in a police station and military checkpoint in Bununu District of Tafawa Balewa local government. The state police command through its commissioner, Ikechukwu Aduba, confirmed the incident.
He said about five suspects have been captured by the combined team of army and police men who engaged the attackers in an exchange of gunfire. The commissioner stated that the security team recovered a number of assembled bombs as well as other weapons. Two churches –one of them an ECWA church-were attacked in Fadaman Mada and Railway Quarters in Bauchi Township early Sunday morning, but there was no loss of lives or injuries.
