Igala Kingdom Loses Revered Paramount Ruler, Aged 102

AFTER serving nearly 56 years on the throne as paramount traditional ruler of the Igala Kingdom, the Attah of Igala, Alhaji Aliyu Ocheja Obaje died on Monday.

The late Attah, who lived for over a century, died at the age of 102 years.

Attah Obaje was one of the longest serving monarchs in modern Nigerian history, having been installed as the youngest ever traditional ruler in Nigeria at the age of 36, on October 20, 1956.

Until his Monday death, the late monarch was the chairman of the Kogi State Council of Traditional Chiefs.  A widely revered traditional ruler, he was awarded the national honor of the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic, GCFR.

A devout Muslim, the late Attah was survived by his wives and many children, among whom is Chief Abdullahi Obaje, a national ex-officio member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The Kogi State government has commenced burial arrangements with the family, according to a press statement issued on Monday by the Special Adviser on Media and Strategy to the state governor, Mr Jacob Edi.
