INEC Calls for Internal Democracy as FCT Elections Hold

FCT Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has reiterated the need for internal party

democracy among political parties toward the success of the forthcoming area council elections scheduled for March 2013.

The Electoral Commissioner in the territory, Mr Godwin Kwanga said this on Thursday during a press conference, called by INEC to release the timetable for the poll.

“Internal party democracy within political parties will ensure that we receive nomination without rancour.

“The presence of party agents at polling stations will increase the credibility of our work,’’ he said.

Kwanga said that political parties were expected to deliver the names of their agents to the six electoral officers of the area councils between March 5 and 8.

He called for the active support of political parties in making sure the success of the exercise.

“We are committed to observing the provisions of the law and the commission will ensure that each of the activities listed will be done as indicated on the timetable.

“Party primaries are expected to be closed by Dec. 31, so that all nomination papers can be submitted by Jan.30, 2013,’’ he said.

Kwanga said that the commission would publish the list of duly nominated candidates on Feb13,, 2013.

He said that the timetable for the polls required the involvement and understanding of all stakeholders to strengthen the country’s democratic enterprise.

He expressed optimism that the involvement of domestic and international observers would add credibility to the exercise.

“We are aware that domestic and international observers will watch us closely to confirm if indeed we can deliver credible, free and fair elections.

“The presence of observers will give representatives of political parties at our polling centres confidence to compel compliance where electoral officials deviate from standard regulations,’’ he said.
