Railworkers Union Shelve Planned Strike

The Nigeria Union of Railways Workers says its proposed nationwide strike has been suspended.

Mr Martins Akinyanju, Secretary of the union, told newsmen in Lagos that the strike was suspended following the memorandum of agreement signed by its management and the union.

The scribe said that the agreement was reached between the Nigeria Railways Corporation and the union at a meeting on Monday.

“We suspended the strike at a meeting with the management where a memorandum of agreement was signed between both parties.

“The union was clamouring for better condition of service and late promotion, among other demands” he said.

Confirming the development, Mr Adeseyi Sijuwade, the NRC Managing Director, told NAN that an agreement had been signed that their “plight would be attended to”.

Sijuwade said that the Iddo, Apapa to Ijoko mass transit train service would operate on Monday.

Hundreds of passengers were stranded at the various train service stations in Lagos due to industrial action embarked upon by the workers in Lagos.

Trains were not on track at press time when passengers expected the service.
