Former Oyo Governor, Abiola Ajimobi, Dies at 70

Former Governor of Oyo State, Senator Abiola Isiaka Ajimobi, is dead. Senator Abiola Ajimobi, who was the Acting National Chairman of All Progressives Congress, APC,

born on December 16, 1949, succumbed to complications from COVID-19 infection at the First Cardiology Hospital, Ikoyi, Lagos, earlier today. He was seventy years old.

He was a captain of the Nigerian Oil and Gas sector where he rose to become the MD/CEO of National Oil and Gas Company Limited, a subsidiary of Shell Petroleum Development Company, SPDC, where he retired and subsequently veered into politics. He was elected a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in 2003. He was educated in both Nigeria and the United States of America.

The challenge to his election as the Governor of Oyo State in 2011 as a result of his dual citizenship resulted in a landmark Court ruling that such a status could not be criminalized in Nigeria.
