Prominent figures around the globe including famous musical icons including Rihana and Beyonce on Tuesday joined
the United Nations (UN) Secretary-General, Mr. António Guterres, in condemning the shooting of the peaceful #EndSARS protesters in Lekki, Lagos State by security operatives.
In a statement made available to the media from UN website which was signed by Stephane Dujarric, said:
“The Secretary-General of UN is following recent developments and happenings in Nigeria and calls for an end to reported police brutality and abuses.”
The Sec. Gen expressed displeasure at the turnout of protest which turned violent because of the intervention by security forces leading to over seven deaths with several persons sustaining injuries.
He, however, sent his condolences to the bereaved families and wishes a speedy recovery to those injured.
According to him, the Nigerian authorities must put in place a mechanism to investigate the glory with the expectation to bring justice to bear.
He said: “The authorities must move swiftly explore avenues to de-escalate the situation. He reiterates the readiness of the United Nations to support national efforts towards finding a solution.”
Also, reacting, presidential flagbearer for Democratic Party, in the coming November election in the United States, Mr. Joe Biden, urged President Muhammadu Buhari to stop the violent crackdown on #EndSARS protesters.
On the violence, he disclosed in a statement, he said: “US must stand with Nigerians who are peacefully demonstrating for police reform and seeking an end to corruption.
‘I urge Buhari and the military to cease the violent crackdown on protesters in Nigeria, which has already resulted in several deaths. My heart goes out to all those who have lost a loved one in the violence.
“The United States must stand with Nigerians who are peacefully demonstrating for police reform and seeking an end to corruption in their democracy. I encourage the government to engage in a good-faith dialogue with civil society to address these long-standing grievances and work together for a more just and inclusive Nigeria.”
