Adewusi reiterated that it is important to re-enforce NIPOST’s contributions towards the socio-cultural and economic development of Nigeria.

According to him, the history of a postage stamp can be traced to 1840, when the first set of postage stamps; penny black and penny blue were introduced in Britain, adding that the initial concept of a postage stamp was to proffer solutions to the prevailing communication and fiscal challenges confronting the British government which made the parliament passed the Postage Duties Bill in 1839.

He said the Bill gave the treasury powers to implement postal reforms. The most notable outcome of that reform was the introduction of postage stamps, championed by Sir Rowland Hill, which has since been copied by most sovereign countries of the world.

Somewhere along the value chain came PHILATELY, which is the collection and study of postage stamps as well as buying and selling of stamps for philatelic purposes, this has become a good source of revenue for many countries and extra – income for many people, he added.

He commended the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy Dr. Ibrahim Pantami, on the launch of the compendium of Nigeria Postage Stamps that tells the true history of Nigeria as recorded from the lens of postage stamps in October last year.

This according to him, justifies a maxim that says ‘as factual as postage stamps’. The postage stamp is a true recorder of events for history and a witness to human civilization over time.

He said: “Today, the Post is not relenting in its resolve to meet the ever dynamic needs of all categories of customers. This is done through the various innovative user- friendly and technological-based products available at our Post Offices and other Postal formation across the Country.

At this juncture, ladies and gentlemen, as we gather at our various places for this presentation of the NIGERIA’S 60th Anniversary Postage Stamps, I use the medium to appeal to all Nigerians to focus more on the ideals that unite us and shun negative tendencies that tend to divide us.
