The Director, Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS), Dr Abdul-Lateef Bello, on Sunday in Abuja, urged members of staff of the service to embrace sports for a healthy living and effective service delivery.
Bello gave the advice to sharpedgenews mon the sideline of the just concluded Table Tennis competition organised by the service in commemoration of his one year in office.
The director said it had become imperative for the member of staff to engage in sporting activities being key to wellbeing as well as enhancing productivity.
Bello added that it was also a way of generating an interaction between officers and men of the service and other sister agencies.
“It is another way of fostering relationship and a way of equally developing our staff in terms of social cohesion, like the popular saying, “All works without play makes Jack a very dull boy“.
The director, however, promised to create an environment that was very virile in terms of service delivery as well as environment that was very relaxed in terms of social cohesiveness.
“An environment that is really friendly, and the only way we can do this is to begin to look at sporting activities that can actually address some of these.
“We may be starting with table tennis because of the fact that it required a very small space, even though it can still generate a very big interaction, thus enhancing productivity.
“Subsequently, we will be looking at other sporting activities like, football, long tennis, volleyball, basketball in short we want to dominate and participate in every other sporting activity like every other service agencies.
“But we have to start from somewhere and I’m very happy that we are able to push table tennis through, which is a testimony that the Head of sports knows his onions.“
Bello also promised to provide other support to the head since he has demonstrated capability and capacity and subsequently, the service would take it further.
He commended those who found it necessary to participate in the event out of their very tight and demanding schedule.
The director, however, assured them that the service would do everything humanly possible to ensure that they participate in sporting activities both within and outside the premises of the service.
“ I want everybody to be rest assured that I will facilitate membership for anybody that is willing to take part in any of the sorting activities that is situated at the stadium.
“Not only that, we have made a special provision for sporting equipment in the proposed 2023 budget.
“And if we are lucky to have it, we will be providing certain basic support and facilities to assist some of our staff who is willing and able to participate in sporting activities.
“Of course, I want to encourage everybody to show willingness because sport is life. I’m not particularly very happy with the way some of us falls sick easily because it has all been work, work and work.
“Without really engaging in sports to keep us fit and even do the job better. I think it is high time we relaxed, play with ourselves thus enabling us to be more productive.“
