On May 26, 2023, the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) prevented an alleged attempt by two women to sell a two-month-old baby.
According to Lagos state police command spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the deal was exposed in Oshodi, with 25-year-old Oge Okolie – the intermediary between the baby’s mother and a prospective buyer – suspected of stealing the baby.
Witnesses on a public bus noticed the baby’s continuous crying, questioning why Okolie couldn’t breastfeed the child if she was the biological mother.
The situation became volatile, with Okolie almost being lynched, but RRS operatives intervened, rescuing the baby and arresting Okolie and the baby’s mother, Maria Ahmadu (26).
The suspects and baby have been transferred to the Gender Unit of the Command for further investigation and prosecution.
RRS Commander, CSP Olayinka Egbeyemi, led the operation.
