FG Drops illegal Firearm charge Against Emefiele, Filles fresh charges against Emefiele

The illegal possession of firearms charge that was filed against suspended Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, at the Federal High Court in Lagos has been withdrawn by the Federal Government.

Initially, Emefiele was granted a N20 million bail by Justice Nicholas Oweibo and was ordered to be remanded at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre until his bail conditions were met.

However, on Tuesday, August 15, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) at the Federal Ministry of Justice, Mohammed Bakodo Abubakar, approached the federal high court in Ikoyi with an oral application to withdraw the charge of illegal firearm possession.

Joseph Daudu (SAN), the defense counsel, opposed this move and accused the government of disobeying the initial court order that granted Emefiele bail.

Abubakar informed journalists after the proceedings that new charges had been filed against Emefiele at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court, with one of the counts accusing Emefiele of “conferring unlawful advantages”.
