NGO trains 50 PWDs on tech skills in FCT community

Lola Cater for the Needy Foundation, an NGO, has trained no fewer than 50 Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) with various tech skills at Anguwan Guragu, a rural settlement in Karamajiji community in the FCT.

Ms Ololade Ogunnubi, Founder of the organisation, disclosed this at the end of a six week-long training for the participants, on Monday in Abuja.

She said said that mastering a new skill was not optional in today’s world, as it will serve as a means of boosting their livelihood.

According to her, the training focused on graphic design, video editing, digital marketing and social media management.

“We were able to empower these young individuals with these skills to enhance their employability prospects, foster their independence and promote social inclusion.

“We are here today to celebrate their graduation and we are excited and encouraged about the beautiful and overwhelming feedback we have been receiving from them.

“The youth population struggles with high unemployment rates and lack of skills relevant to the contemporary job market or for self-employment.

“Persons with Disabilities in particular, encounter barriers to education and employment due to limited accessibility and societal challenges.

“We are glad that with this training, they will be self-sufficient and empowered,” she said.

Also speaking, Ms Ipele Lolade, Project Manager of the training, added that the essence of the training was to enable the participants become self-employed.

“Most of them can make different designs, market their goods online and also make use of digital devices.

“However, when we started the training, we noticed that most of them do not know what an email is, among other basic tech knowledge.

“But now, we are happy that they know all these things and they can use it to fend for themselves.

“We do not want them to be discouraged, especially when some organisations refuse to employ them due to their condition.

“With these skills, they can work from the comfort of their homes and get paid, just like the trending virtual jobs,” she said.

A beneficiary, Mr Ibrahim Sagir, appreciated the organisation for the training, adding that the skills learnt would make him a better person and be able to fend for himself and his family.
