Gombe LG polls: Change the current narrative… GONET task Government

Gombe State Network of Civil Society (GONET) has tasked the Gombe State Government on changing the negative narrative surrounding Local Government elections that has always been marred by exclusivity and lack of transparency.

In it’s reaction to last Saturday’s Local Governments election in the State, the Civil Society group said it also observed that the election was marred by voter apathy and logistical challenges.

Ambassador Ibrahim Yusuf, Chairman of GONET in a press statement shared with our correspondent said, in some polling units, there was the experience of delayed arrival of election materials.

The group pointed out that there is an urgent need for improvement in subsequent Local Government elections.

“GONET strongly urges the Government to change the narrative surrounding LGA elections by taking necessary steps to ensure inclusivity and transparency.

“It is imperative to carry all citizens along in the electoral process to avoid the anomalies witnessed during this recent election”, Ibrahim Yusuf stressed.

However, while congratulating the winners of the election, GONET urged the newly elected Local Government chairmen and councillors to approach their responsibilities with utmost seriousness.

It said, “As the tier of Government closest to the people at the grassroots level, it is crucial for them to address the current hardships experienced by citizens.

“This includes providing basic necessities such as education, healthcare, water, electricity, roads, and subsidized agricultural inputs.

“GONET remains committed to promoting democratic principles, accountable governance, and holistic development within Gombe State.

“We call on all stakeholders to work together towards achieving a more transparent and inclusive electoral process that truly reflects the will of the people”, the statement reiterated.
