
The United Nations Association of Africa (UNAA) has expressed its full support for the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, and call the National Assembly to accelerate efforts toward fulfilling promises made to women.
Speaking on the sidelines of the Nigerian Senate’s event marking the International Women’s Day (IWD) 2025, the President General of UNAA; Chief Amb Sir. Sylvester Okafor, who was represented by Amb Lizzy Oziri, emphasized the need for greater inclusion of women in governance and policy-making.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that The event, Themed “Accelerate Action – Economic and Political Inclusion: Walk the Talk,” served as a platform for advocates to push for gender equality and legislative action.
“We are calling on the President of the Senate to accelerate action on policies that promote women’s inclusion in governance,” the president stated. “We appreciate the efforts made so far, but we urge the leadership of the National Assembly to follow through on their commitments to women.”
UNAA members expressed gratitude to the Senate leadership, including the Deputy Senate President, the Senate Leader, and the Chief Whip, for their support of women’s empowerment initiatives.
Also speaking at the event, Ambassador Loyce Ogueri; *Executive Personal Assistant to Chief Sir Sylvester Okafor, *President General of UNAA*, highlighted the association’s commitment to fostering peace, economic progress, and social development in Africa.
“UNAA is a global community committed to advancing the principles and values of the United Nations,” she said. “Our mission is to empower women, youth, and underrepresented communities across Africa to actively engage with and actualize the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).”
Loyce reaffirmed UNAA’s dedication to supporting the Senate’s policies and called for continued inclusion of women in governance and decision-making processes.
“As we celebrate International Women’s Day, we recognize the efforts of the Senate in supporting women’s rights. We urge them to sustain this momentum and ensure that policies favoring women’s empowerment are fully implemented,” she added.
UNAA pledged its unwavering support for the Senate leadership, emphasizing its role in advocating for gender equality and sustainable development across Africa. (NAN)
