LOCAL officials in Maiduguri, in the north-eastern state of Borno State, have confirmed the death of eight people today, three of whom were beheaded by the villainous Boko Haram extremists terrorizing that section of the country.
Informants on the ground report the echo of gunfire through the streets as violence erupted a day after reports emerged that up to 18 people were murdered in the village of Cbsbsbsb in the same state.
According to the spokesperson for the paramilitary Joint Task Force in the area, Lieutenant-Colonel Sagir Musa, three people were beheaded in a dawn raid by the extremists. Four bodies were later found in the area.
Eyewitnesses also say a fifth person was shot dead by the extremists, even as they drew mortar fire from the Joint Task Force personnel stationed in the area.
Although it says it is motivated by Islam, Boko Haram is waging a bloody sectarian fight against local and federal authorities government, which has been unable to stop the violence. The sect is suspected to be responsible for the killing of 5 people in Kano.
On Saturday, the Emir of the ancient city of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, was almost killed in a deadly attack believed to have been masterminded by the outlawed group. The Emir lost his driver and three other personal aides.
