The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has issued a cautionary statement regarding a planned nationwide protest organized by the “Take It Back Movement,” scheduled for Monday, April 7, 2025. The date coincides with the Federal Government’s inaugural celebration of National Police Day, an event intended to honor the dedication and resilience of police officers across the country.
While recognizing citizens’ constitutional right to peaceful assembly, the NPF expressed concern over the timing of the protest, which overlaps with a day meant to celebrate the contributions of law enforcement to national security. The event is expected to host dignitaries from Nigeria and abroad, including foreign Inspectors-General of Police and diplomats.
In a statement released by Force Public Relations Officer ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the NPF described the protest as “ill-timed and mischievous,” suggesting it could undermine the image of both the police force and the nation. The organizers were urged to reconsider their plans and engage in dialogue with appropriate government institutions to press their demands.
The protest, reportedly fueled by dissatisfaction with governance under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, has gained traction on social media through hashtags like #RevolutionNow. Activists have cited economic hardships, unemployment, and alleged authoritarian policies as key grievances. Meanwhile, reports indicate that security agencies, including the Department of State Services (DSS), have begun targeting activists associated with the movement.
The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, reaffirmed the NPF’s commitment to upholding citizens’ rights while maintaining law and order. The police emphasized their readiness to ensure public safety during both National Police Day celebrations and any protests that may occur.
As tensions rise ahead of April 7, citizens are advised to exercise caution and prioritize dialogue in addressing their concerns.
