Retreat wants Effective Media Strategy to Drive Govt. “Transformation Agenda”

Stakeholders at a retreat on “Government’s Development Agenda” have emphasised the need for comprehensive media strategy and resource mobilisation to encourage Nigerians to play their roles in

driving the agenda and Vision 20;2020.

This was contained in a 10-point communiqué issued at the end of the two-day Stakeholders’ retreat in Calabar on Saturday.

According to the communiqué, stakeholders at the Federal and State levels should also collaborate to make the content of the transformation agenda and the vision available to members of the public.

It urged the stakeholders to ensure that the publicity drive for the agenda and the vision be actualised through utilisation of existing channels of communication from the traditional to modern method.

It suggested that such media channels should include the social media (Face book), the Internet, the print and broadcast media.

It also urged the government to develop programmes for the understanding, appreciation and ownership of the transformation agenda and vision 20:2020 and other economic initiatives.

According to the communiqué, these programmes will facilitate the effective implementation of the agenda and the vision.

It said that stakeholders should work closely with government on value re-orientation and attitudinal change at all levels in order to discourage mistrust and cynicism on government development agenda.

It stated that financial resources should be mobilised by all tiers of government to facilitate the implementation of what it called strategic communication activities for effective mobilisation of the citizens.

“Steps should be taken by government to incorporate the objectives and goals of the agenda and the vision into the sectoral strategic planning and budgeting processes of MDAs at the federal and sub-national levels.
