BREAKING: ASUU Suspends Two-Week Warning Strike

By Gami Tadanyigbe

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced the suspension of its ongoing two-week warning strike. National President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, made the announcement at a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday.

According to Piwuna, the decision followed an overnight National Executive Council (NEC) meeting that ended at 4:00 am. The union had embarked on the strike due to the government’s failure to meet its demands.

Piwuna stated that ASUU had engaged with government representatives on the renegotiation of the 2009 agreements, but noted that progress had been made. The NEC decided to review the strike, acknowledging the government’s return to the negotiation table.

The suspension was also in response to efforts by students, parents, and the Nigeria Labour Congress. ASUU is still demanding the conclusion of the renegotiated agreement, release of withheld salaries, sustainable university funding, and an end to lecturer victimization, among other issues.

I made some minor adjustments to improve clarity and flow. Let me know if you’d like further changes!
