SENATOR ORJI KALU RETURNS TO PLENARY AS SENATE TACKLES ELECTORAL REFORM AND HEALTH OVERHAUL

Following the festive recess, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu returned to the hallowed chambers of the Senate this week, transitioning from a moment of solemn remembrance for a fallen colleague to the high-stakes business of reshaping Nigeria legislative landscape.

The session opened on a somber note as Kalu joined fellow lawmakers in a heartfelt tribute to the late Senator Godiya Akwashiki of Nasarawa North.

Reflecting on Akwashiki dedication to the republic before his passing on December 31, Kalu offered prayers for his colleague repose, marking a poignant start to a legislative year defined by both duty and the weight of national loss.

In today PLENARY, The momentum quickly shifted toward systemic reform as the Senate delved into the Electoral Act (Repeal and Enactment) Bill, 2026.

Presented by Senator Simon Bako Lalong, the bill represents a pivotal effort to fortify Nigeria democratic framework.

Kalu took an active role in the deliberations, championing not only national electoral integrity but also local environmental stability. He advocated strongly for federal intervention to combat the “escalating ecological degradation” threatening his district, linking the preservation of land and infrastructure directly to the economic survival and living standards of his constituents.

On the policy front, the Senate received a massive legislative package from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, consisting of 24 health sector bills aimed at a total governance overhaul. Kalu welcomed the executive transmission, which seeks to trim “over-bloated” board memberships and streamline the administration of teaching hospitals and regulatory agencies.

By focusing on efficiency and leaner governance, these reforms—vetted by the Attorney-General and the Ministry of Health—aim to transform service delivery across the federation.

For SENATOR Kalu, the week served as a reaffirmation of his legislative mantra: a commitment to governance that prioritizes the welfare of the Nigerian people through structural excellence.
