FUTA Clarifies Status of MBBS Programme, Says Course Remains Fully Operational

Akure, Nigeria — February 5, 2026.

The Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), has clarified the status of its Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme, affirming that the course remains fully operational and has neither been suspended nor discontinued.
In a press statement issued on February 4, 2026, the university addressed what it described as false and misleading insinuations suggesting that the medical programme had been put on hold.

FUTA explained that while admission into the MBBS programme for the 2026/2027 academic session has been paused, the decision affects only one admission cycle and does not in any way indicate the termination of the programme.

According to the statement, the temporary pause in admissions is a strategic administrative measure aimed at ensuring a seamless academic calendar and facilitating hitch-free clinical training for students already enrolled. The university stressed that the decision was taken to further strengthen the quality of medical education delivery rather than diminish it.

FUTA reassured stakeholders that all current MBBS students continue to receive uninterrupted academic and clinical training. It noted that the College of Health Sciences is working closely with the FUTA Teaching Hospital to guarantee smooth, effective, and comprehensive clinical exposure for medical students.

The university also expressed appreciation to key partners and stakeholders whose support has contributed to the establishment and growth of the MBBS programme. Those acknowledged include President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu; the Ondo State Government under Governor Dr. Lucky Aiyedatiwa; the Minister of Health, Professor Mohammed Ali Pate; the Deji of Akure Kingdom, Oba (Dr.) Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade Aladelusi (CFR); elder statesman Pa Reuben Fasoranti; the Ondo State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Banji Ajaka; and other members of the FUTA–Akure partnership.

University management reiterated its long-term commitment to the training and production of critical healthcare manpower for national development, emphasizing that the MBBS programme remains a core component of FUTA’s academic and developmental vision.
The statement was signed by Adegbenro Adebanjo, Director, Corporate Communication and Protocol, FUTA.
