The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially concluded the second phase of the nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, marking a significant milestone in preparations for the 2027 General Election.
According to the commission’s weekly update released on Friday, April 17, 2026, a total of 3,748,704 completed registrations were recorded during the second phase of the exercise. The figure reflects a combination of successful online pre-registrations and in-person completions at designated centres across the country, underscoring sustained public engagement in the electoral process.
A detailed breakdown of the figures shows that 2,259,288 Nigerians completed their registration through INEC’s online pre-registration portal, while 1,489,416 registrants finalized the process physically at registration centres nationwide. However, the commission clarified that the figures remain preliminary and are subject to further verification.
With the registration phase now concluded, INEC has shifted focus to the next critical stage—the display of the Register of Voters for Claims and Objections. This process is aimed at enhancing the credibility and accuracy of the voter register ahead of the elections.
The display exercise is scheduled to take place nationwide from April 20 to April 26, 2026, during which registered voters are expected to visit designated centres to verify their personal details. The commission emphasized that this window provides an opportunity for citizens to identify and report irregularities, including duplicate entries, names of deceased persons, and non-citizens on the register.
INEC urged all Nigerians who participated in the second phase of the CVR to actively engage in the verification process, stressing that public participation is vital to ensuring a transparent and credible electoral roll.
The CVR exercise, which is being conducted in phases, began its first phase on August 18, 2025, and ended on December 10, 2025. The just-concluded second phase commenced on January 5, 2026, and ran through April 17, 2026.
Looking ahead, the commission disclosed that the third phase of the CVR will resume on May 4, 2026, and continue until August 17, 2026, offering another opportunity for eligible Nigerians who have yet to register.
This will be followed by a third round of the voter register display for claims and objections, scheduled for August 24 to August 30, 2026.
Reaffirming its commitment to electoral integrity, INEC stressed that maintaining a clean and credible voter register remains fundamental to the conduct of free, fair, and transparent elections in Nigeria.
