Restoring Hope in Otukpo After Renewed Attacks

By Bridget Tikyaa

The recent attacks by armed assailants on the Akpachi and Otukpo-Nobi communities in Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State, which claimed several lives and left many others injured, have drawn widespread condemnation across the country. The tragic incidents have also prompted the Benue State Government to intensify security measures aimed at protecting lives, restoring public confidence, and ensuring lasting peace across the state.

The Nigerian Senate has equally expressed concern over the recurring violence, urging security agencies to deploy additional personnel and reassess their operational strategies to effectively tackle the growing insecurity.

There is no doubt that the attacks have resulted in loss of lives, displacement of residents, destruction of property, and widespread fear among affected communities. Such barbaric and senseless acts are part of a disturbing pattern of violence that has continued to threaten the peace and stability of Benue State.

Consequently, individuals, community leaders, civil society organisations, and other stakeholders have called for thorough investigations and decisive action by the federal, state, and local authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Governor Hyacinth Alia has consistently demonstrated the resolve of his administration to protect every citizen and every part of Benue State. As a leader committed to the welfare and security of his people, the governor promptly visited Otukpo following the attacks to assess the security situation firsthand, sympathise with victims and their families, and strengthen efforts to prevent further attacks.

While in Otukpo, Governor Alia visited the Federal University of Health Sciences Teaching Hospital, where victims receiving treatment for varying degrees of injuries were admitted. In a compassionate gesture, he directed that the Benue State Government should bear the full cost of their medical treatment, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to the welfare of affected citizens.

At the palace of the Och’Idoma, His Royal Majesty Agaba’Idu Elaigwu Odogbo Obagaji John, the governor reaffirmed his commitment to protecting lives and property, declaring:
“It is my obligation to protect every life in Benue State, and we shall not rest on our oars until lasting peace is fully restored to our communities.”

This declaration reflects not only empathy but also a firm commitment to responsible leadership and decisive action in addressing the state’s security challenges.

Governor Alia also appealed to residents to support ongoing security operations by providing timely, credible, and actionable intelligence to security agencies. Effective intelligence gathering remains one of the most potent tools in preventing attacks, saving lives, and reducing the humanitarian consequences of insecurity.

He further urged the youth to collaborate closely with security operatives by identifying and exposing criminal elements operating within their communities, stressing that sustainable security can only be achieved through collective responsibility.

As part of broader peace-building efforts, the governor announced plans to convene a stakeholders’ roundtable involving representatives from the affected communities to discuss their concerns and develop practical, long-term solutions to the prevailing security challenges.

The Och’Idoma, Dr. John Elaigwu, commended Governor Alia’s prompt intervention and acknowledged the swift response of security agencies to the crisis, describing their actions as reassuring and encouraging to the people of the Idoma Kingdom.

While government and security agencies continue to strengthen proactive measures against criminality, one disturbing trend that continues to undermine security efforts is the deliberate circulation of false and misleading information on social media.

The spread of misinformation fuels fear, creates confusion, undermines public confidence, and hampers coordinated efforts to safeguard lives and property. Security is a shared responsibility that requires cooperation, trust, and responsible communication from all citizens.

It is important to acknowledge that the Benue State Government, under the leadership of Governor Hyacinth Alia, has remained proactive in addressing insecurity. The administration has continued to provide logistical support to security agencies, deploy additional security personnel to vulnerable communities, and strengthen collaboration with federal security institutions in tackling banditry and the persistent farmer-herder conflict.

The Federal Government has also demonstrated its commitment to addressing the security situation through several strategic interventions. These include strengthening community policing initiatives, establishing two additional Area Commands, upgrading five police stations to Divisional Headquarters, and approving the construction of an airstrip in Gboko to enhance security operations and facilitate humanitarian response across the state.

Ultimately, government efforts alone cannot guarantee lasting peace. Sustainable security can only be achieved when citizens actively support law enforcement agencies by remaining vigilant, reporting suspicious activities promptly, rejecting misinformation, protecting one another, and refusing to shield criminals, regardless of their background or affiliation.
Only through collective action, mutual trust, and unwavering commitment can Benue overcome its security challenges and restore the peace its people so richly deserve.
