The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has charged officers and personnel of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to actively contribute to the ongoing national conversation on the proposed establishment of State Police, stressing that informed participation is critical to shaping the future of policing in Nigeria.
The IGP gave the charge on Thursday August 6, 2026 while delivering his opening remarks at a one-day workshop on State Police organised by the Nigeria Police Institute at the Nigeria Police Resource Centre, Jabi, Abuja.
Addressing participants, IGP Disu described the workshop as a timely and strategic initiative designed to examine the concept of State Police and its implications for the Nigeria Police Force amid growing nationwide discussions on policing reforms.
“It gives me great pleasure to welcome you all to this important workshop organised by the Nigeria Police Institute to examine the subject of State Police and its implications for the Nigeria Police Force,” the IGP said.
He noted that as debates on the establishment of State Police continue to gather momentum across the country, it is imperative for members of the Nigeria Police Force to remain well-informed and actively engaged in the discourse.
According to him, the workshop provides an important platform for participants to ask critical questions, address legitimate concerns, and make meaningful contributions that will enrich the national conversation on the proposed policing structure.
IGP Disu urged participants to approach the discussions with objectivity, openness, and professionalism, emphasizing that the knowledge gained should extend beyond the workshop.
He tasked officers to return to their various Commands and Formations and share the insights acquired with their colleagues to promote wider understanding of the issues surrounding State Police.
The police chief said such knowledge-sharing would help dispel misconceptions, address genuine concerns, and reduce the anxieties that often accompany discussions on major institutional reforms.
He stressed that fostering informed dialogue within the Force would ensure that police personnel are adequately prepared to contribute constructively to policy discussions on the future of policing in Nigeria.
Commending the Nigeria Police Institute for organising the workshop, IGP Disu described the initiative as both timely and commendable, expressing confidence that the deliberations would produce valuable recommendations capable of strengthening the Force’s contributions to the national discourse on security sector reforms.
He wished participants fruitful deliberations and reaffirmed his commitment to building a professional, knowledgeable, and forward-looking Nigeria Police Force capable of adapting to the country’s evolving security landscape while effectively serving the interests of Nigerians.
