Nigeria and Russia have agreed to renegotiate their Bilateral Air Service Agreement, which was signed in 1967, with both countries setting a six-month timeline to conclude negotiations and sign a new agreement in April 2027.
Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, disclosed this in his official X following a meeting with Russia’s State Secretary and Deputy Minister of Transport, Dmitry Stanislavovich Zverev, on the sidelines of the Third Russia-Africa Summit in Moscow.
Keyamo said both countries had established negotiating teams to facilitate the process, with the signing of the revised agreement scheduled to take place in Saint Petersburg in April 2027.
“We resolved to renegotiate our last Bilateral Air Service Agreement that was made in 1967. We set a time-line of six months to conclude the negotiations and sign a new one in Saint Petersburg in April, 2027,” he said.
The minister added that the meeting also examined other areas of cooperation between Nigeria and Russia, with both sides agreeing to explore opportunities for collaboration in the coming months.
Keyamo said he attended the meeting alongside the Director-General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), the Registrar of the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology (NCAT), and directors from the ministry and the NCAA.
The planned renegotiation comes amid broader efforts to strengthen cooperation between Nigeria and Russia during the ongoing Russia-Africa engagements in Moscow.
