Police Detain ASP Omotayo Olajide Over Fatal Shooting of Young Girl in Lagos

LAGOS, Nigeria — The Lagos State Police Command has disarmed and detained Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Omotayo Olajide following the tragic fatal shooting of a young girl, Omole Taiwo, and the wounding of another in the Ajegunle area of the state.
The incident occurred on Thursday night, November 5, 2026, between 9:30 PM and 10:00 PM, when police operatives were deployed to the Nosamu area to quell a violent territorial clash over toll collection between two rival street factions: the Nosamu Boys and the Alayabiagba Boys.
According to a statement issued on Saturday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, the opposing groups were heavily armed with cutlasses and other dangerous weapons when officers arrived to restore public order.
Tragic Turn During Enforcement
During the operation, ASP Olajide discharged his firearm, and a stray bullet struck two young girls.
Both victims were immediately rushed to the Ajeromi General Hospital for emergency medical care. Omole Taiwo was subsequently transferred to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) in Ikeja, where she was pronounced dead. The second victim remains hospitalized and is reported to be in stable condition.
Expressing profound sorrow over the incident, the command confirmed that the case file has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a comprehensive, impartial investigation to ascertain the exact circumstances of the shooting.
Commissioner of Police Assures Justice
Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani Fatai, personally visited the grieving family to offer his condolences. He assured relatives and the public that justice will be rigorously served and pledged that any officer found culpable will face the full weight of the law without protection.
Reaffirming the command’s dedication to accountability, professional standards, and the preservation of human life, police authorities have urged anyone with relevant information or eyewitness accounts to assist investigators by reporting to the nearest police station or the Command’s Public Relations Department.
