FG Cautions Consumers/Retailers over Use of Sniper

By Dwelleth Morountodun

The federal government through one of its agencies, the Consumer Protection Council (CPC), has cautioned consumers and retailers on the application

or use of 2,2-dichlorovinyle phosphate (DDVP) otherwise known as sniper to preserve, eliminate and protect beans from weevils attack.

The agency in a statement signed by its DG, Mr. Babatunde Irukera, acknowledged that retailers mostly in the open market are using sniper to preserve food though without intent to harm.

While cautioning consumers and retailers on use of sniper, the DG said sniper is potentially injurious when inhaled, direct skin contact or ingestion.

He said: “Although cooking generally eliminates or significantly reduces the risk of exposure from pesticides, as most are diminished under extended periods of direct heat in excess of 100 degrees, the best possible caution is to avoid subjecting food items to pesticides not in accordance with prevailing food safety regulations.

According to him, the Council is collaborating with other agencies to address, but advises caution both to sellers and consumers.

However, in the interim, Irukera advised consumers to make sufficient inquiries prior to purchases, and when uncertain, especially with respect to stock already purchased, parboil extensively before cooking for consumption.

He added that thorough washing of food items before consumption or preparation for consumption is a generally accepted method of protecting and promoting safety.
