The federal government, has said it is taking necessary measures to ensure, the brightest and most brilliant students are attracted
and take to teaching profession at all levels from primary to tertiary education.
The Minister of Science and Technology Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, disclosed this when he received in his office, a delegation from the Nigerian Teacher’s Institute (NTI) Kaduna on Tuesday.
Onu, said the government is working hard to encourage students to study in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) to enable them become professionals in many key areas in future.
He said: “We believe that the NTI can help us by ensuring we train our students study sciences and mathematics”.
He further tasked the teacher’s institute to assist the government to find a means of allocating more resources to the teaching of Science and mathematics.
“Many children get frightened when they are asked to study mathematics, arithmetic and Science subjects. We believe that this institute can help make it easier for students to understand the relevance of these subjects to their everyday lives”. He added.
He also lays emphasis on training young Nigerian professionals, who would be involved in the conversion of the nation’s abundant raw materials into finished goods and products needed by the country.
Earlier, the leader of the delegation and Director of ICT in the Nigerian Teachers Institute, Mr. Shehu Dalhatu, said that our communities should take a cue from past glory, when teachers and schools were highly revered and stood-out as value-adding institutions.
He further said, that a synergy between teachers and the society, whereby the value added to students would help them be better members of the society.
