Delta Commissioner Advocates End to Fuel Subsidy

PATRICK Muoboghare, the Delta State commissioner for basic and secondary education, is calling for the total removal of petrol subsidy in Nigeria.

Muoboghare made the call when members of National Association of Niger Delta Students visited him on Thursday in Asaba.

He said that the removal of the subsidy would bring about a level playing ground for operators in the sector.

According to him, what currently obtains in the sector does not make economic sense.

Muoboghare said that although petrol subsidy had served as a conduit pipe for some people, those against the removal had not been sincere with their argument.

He said that many towns and villages in the Niger Delta region could hardly afford a litre of petrol or other petroleum products at the official price.

The commissioner advised members of the public to be careful in their dealings with human rights activists on oil subsidy issues.

Mr Lucky Emonefe, the President of the association, said that the association was proposing a seminar and sensitisation programme on the problems facing the region.

Emonefe said that the programme, tagged: “From Gun Militancy to Pen Militancy’’, was to re-orientate the youths from violence to non-violence approach to struggles in the Niger Delta.
