Tourists and workers were evacuated from the Eiffel Tour for more than two hours Friday following a bomb alert, but it later reopened.
It was closed at about 2 p.m. local time (8 a.m. ET) for “security reasons,” according to a spokeswoman for the attraction.
The alert was triggered by an anonymous call reporting a suspicious package.
However, police carried out a search and the tower reopened just over two hours later. Tourists were seen in the viewing decks, as normal.
The 1,062-foot iron tower was built in 1889 – one of the world’s most recognizable monuments – is regularly subject to bomb scares, Reuters reported. Such threats are usually quickly found to be hoaxes and only cause full evacuations a couple of times a year, it said.
