The Students of the University of Abuja on Monday staged a protest over the non-accreditation of courses at the institution by the NUC, forcing the school authorities to shut the institution whose main campus is located in the Gwagwalada district of the capital city.
Some of the courses are yet to get the necessary approval at the institution according to one the students of the institution who said the development areas are: Veterinary Medicine, Medicine, Economics, Agricultural Science, Computer Science, Engineering and over a dozen other courses.
It was learnt that the inability of some students enrolled in non-accredited courses to join others presently writing examinations at the institution spurred the protest.
The students barricaded the main entrance to the institution just as soldiers and policemen were called in to restore law and order. there was no reports of injury.
Update: Students unrest continued into the night
Reports say the student unrest continued into the night. The protests which started on Monday morning at the two campuses of the institution escalated, with students setting up bonfires and shutting down the school’s electricity. Also, it was said that the protest clashed with Fulani herdsmen.
Two students who spoke to our correspondent said herdsmen operating inside the main campus attacked protesting students with cutlasses, sticks and stones. The students said there have been clashes between the protesters and the cattle watchmen.
They said soldiers have been deployed around the ‘mini campus’ of the institution to restore law and order.
As at the time of filing this report, a source disclosed that male students have taken positions in front of the female hostels on campus in order to protect the girls from the fulani herds.
