The fate of the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Abdullahi Adamu was put in further suspense on Sunday after the party postponed its National Caucus and National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting earlier scheduled for July 10 and 11.
The national caucus and National Executive Committee, NEC were scheduled in the face of mounting pressure from alleged supporters of President Bola Tinubu to oust Adamu over perceived political infractions against the president.
Adamu had questioned the emergence of the principal officers of the National Assembly despite claims that the nominations were worked out in cahoots with the presidency.
Adamu, it would be recalled had been reported to be against the emergence of Tinubu as the presidential candidate of the party having been quoted as saying that Senator Ahmad Lawan was the preferred choice as a consensus candidate of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
He had also been quoted as vowing to punish Tinubu before the national convention after the Emilokan speech in Abeokuta penultimate June. According to the national chairman the speech was an insult on the former president. He, however, failed to mete out a punishment and Tinubu pushed forward to win the ticket and the election.
The different positions of the national chairman have led to agitations from some quarters for his exit which some claim could be pushed through at the forthcoming caucus and NEC meeting.
However, party secretary, Senator Iyiola Omisore, announced on Sunday in a statement that the meetings had been postponed for at least one week.
He explained that the postponement was necessitated by the regional and sub-regional schedules and engagements of President Bola Tinubu, as the new Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
“Members of the National Caucus and NEC of the APC are hereby informed that our meetings of July 10th and 11th of July, have been postponed to July 18th and 19th 2023 respectively,” he said.
The APC National Caucus which is a statutory organ of the party, is chaired by President Tinubu and has the Vice-President, Sen Kashim Shettima and all the party’s former governors as members.
Its membership also includes the party’s serving governors, and members of its National Working Committee (NWC) among others.
The suspense over Adamu as national chairman of the APC is expected to be resolved when the party’s leaders meet next week.
