AMB Chief Ebosetale David Aigbefoh Esq, has called on all individuals and organisations on safety measures to enable a safer country for the development of the country.
Aigbefoh made the call during a public lecture he delivered on the occassion of National Skills Aquisition And Empowerment Programme (NASEP) in Abuja.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Expo and Symposium of Lectures on promoting safety Culture in Nigeria Held at Enterprise Technology Centre, Ground Floor, Federal Ministry of Education Phase 3 Federal Secretariat, Eagles Square, Abuja, tagged “EDUCATING NIGERIANS ON THE IMPERATIVES OF SAFETY LAW IN OUR NATIONAL LIFE AND THE SECURITY OF NIGERIA”
The Barrister who was awarded with a ” distinguished safety honours 2022 on Safety Code of Ethics” said Safety and security generally involves protection as the key aspect, but they don’t mean the same thing.
According to him, Safety measures are designed to protect people from injuries, accidents and exposure to hazardous conditions.
“Safety is important because it helps protect people from accident and injuries and safety procedures can help prevent accidents from happening at work place.
“On the other hand, security is important because it helps protect people from crime and violence, security procedures and protocols can deter criminal activities and help create a work environment that is safe and secured.
The Acts/laws relating to safety and security are not exhaustive, below are some of the safety Acts/Laws. Factory Act Cap F1 LFN 2004, FIRE SERVICE ACT CAP F29 LFN 2004, FOOD AND DRUGS ACT CAPF32 LFN 2004, FOOD, DRUGS AND RELATED PRODUCTS (REGISTRATION,ETC)ACT CAP F33 LFN 2004, CONSUMERS PROTECTION COUNCIL ACT CAP C25 LFN 2004, HARMFUL WASTE (SPECIAL CRIMINAL PROVISION)ACT CAP H1 LFN 2004, DANGEROUS DRUGS ACT CAP D1 LFN 2004, EXPLOSIVE ACT LFN 2004, FIREARMS ACT CAP F28 LFN 2004 AND COUNTERFEIT AND FAKE DRUGS AND UNWHOLESOME PROCESSED FOODS( MISCELLANEOUS PROVISIONS) ACT CAP C34 2004. ETC.
COUNTERFEIT AND FAKE DRUGS AND UNWHOLESOME PROCESSED FOODS( MISCELLANEOUS PROVISIONS) ACT CAP C34 2004 “It is an Act that provides for the prohibition of sale and distribution of counterfeit, adulterated, banned or fake substandard or expired drug or unwholesome processed food and of sale etc of drugs or poisons in certain premises or places.
“The Federal high Court has the exclusive Jurisdiction to try offences under this Act.
While calling on all Nigerians to be Security conscious, he maintained that security measures are designed to protect people from theft, vandalism, terrorism and other threats.
Besides, he said Safety can be defined as the state of being free from harm or danger. It includes the measures taken to protect people from accident, injuries and exposure to hazardous conditions.
However, he said Safety is often achieved through the implementation of safety procedures and protocols, adding that these procedures are designed to minimize the likelihood of an accident or injury occurring.
“Safety measure procedures and protocols are creations of various laws and there are 5 basic safety regulations in Nigeria and many other Acts.
“The health and safety at work Act 1974, the Personal Protective Equipment at work in Regulations 1992, Provision and use of work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER), Lifting Operations and lifting equipment regulations 1998 (LDLER) and the work at height regulations (WAHR),” he said.
On her part, the GMD/CHAIRMAN/RESEARCHER & Founder worldwide of “AGRO-ALLIED CSP NIG LTD, Queen Mother, Prof. Adesuyi Victoria Abike. PhD, FCPA, called on all individuals to support safer and healthier citizenry, particularly, at workplaces that Nigeria is Known as AGRO-ALLIED Country and should be referred to as such.
Prof. Adesuyi noted that the goals of safety ethics could only be achieved with the support of individuals and organisations in the country.
The Secretary General of UNIVERSAL PEACE FEDERATION (UPF) an NGO with General Consultative Status at the UN- ECOSOC, DR GEORGE IKPOT who commended the lecture said there was need for adequate record of business activities for safety purposes.
DR GEORGE also admonished Nigerians, especially entreprenures to adhere strictly to business safety measures to safeguard themselves from unnecessary loss in their businesses.
According to him, adherence to safety measures would encourage the socio-economic development of the country.
On his part, the Eze Gburugburu of Igbo in Abuja, Apo Mechanic, Prof IGWE CHARLES EMMANUEL, encouraged Nigerians to participate on Agricultural Schemes for food sufficiency of the country.
However, he called on the Federal Government to provide adequate security measures for farmers to encourage farming for food production in the society.
