EBOSETALE DAVID AIGBEFOH ESQ, The Vice Chairman and Head, Human Rights Committee of Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Gwagwalada Branch, FCT has called on the government at all levels to enact stiffer laws to help address issues of human rights abuse for the development of the country.
Aigbefoh made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in his capacity as the Chairman, Human Rights Committee during a Symposium And Honours Day tagged: The Role of Education, Human Rights and Security in Nation Building.”
NAN reports that the symposium is in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Education, National Skill Acquisition & Empowerment Programme and Human Rights Committee,NBA Gwagwalada Branch.
He noted with dismay the continuous assault, molestation and unwarranted human right abuses meted on the citizens of the country, saying it was not in the interest of national development.
“The symposium is born out of genuine Concern about our nation, hence the theme: The Role of Education, Human Rights and Security in Nation Building.”he said.
The Keynote Speaker and Former Dean, Faculty of Law, University of Abuja, Prof. K.M Waziri in his erudite and scintillating lecture identified Lack of quality education as one of the key factors that give rise to human rights abuse and insecurity in the country, he urged the government at various levels to increase funding and genuine investment in Education sector in order to stem the tide of Human Rights Abuse and Insecurity towards Nation Building.
The Hon. Minister of State for Education represented by his S.A on Projects Otunba Adenaike reiterated the need for parents to continually complement the efforts of government in the area of Child education, as this will go a long way in reducing the number of out of school children to the barest minimum and help stem the tide of growing illiteracy which has its ripple effect on insecurity.
On his part, Mazi Afam Osigwe,SAN Commended NBA Gwagwalada Branch under the leadership of I. A Aliyu the current Chairman of the Branch and members of the Human Rights Committee for putting the event together. He called on the Government to make more funds available to the Education Sector as this is the bedrock of all other sectors of the economy.
The Executive Secretary, National Human Rights Commission,Mr Tony Ojukwu,SAN,ably represented by Mrs Okoh , Assistant Director,Legal Department also joined the rest of Nigerians at the event to make a clarion call for the need for more respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms.Restating his strong beliefs in the fact that chapter two of the 1999 Constitution as amended would soon be made justiciable and enforceable in the ongoing proposal and amendment process before the national assembly.
Also Speaking at the event, the first lawyer and First woman to become a Senior Advocate of Nigeria(SAN) in Nigerian Bar Association(NBA) Gwagwalada Branch and the entire Gwagwalada Judicial Division, Prof. Josephine A. A Agbonika SAN, Mummy of the Branch emphasized on the need for parents to take more interest in the training and wellbeing of their wards for a better society “Morality should be instilled in the citizens to help checkmate the menace, however citizens and government must work together in order to achieve all-round success,” she said.

Bishop Vampe of the International Christian Association for Development Goals also during the event decried the disturbing trend of human rights abuse especially at the hands of security agencies, adding that there was need to always engage the criminal justice system to help address the abuse.

Prof. Y.M Damagum, Director Academic Planning, University of Abuja, on his part, said education is critical to the exercise of other human rights because it develops the human mind and reduce other negativities like poverty and class segregation.
Damagum said despite the importance of education as an avenue for the sustainable of other attributes of human rights, many countries are failing in the era of education and human asset development.
He said there are more questions to be asked like what happens next, with corruption, mistrust, insecurity, poor quality education and other negativities towards achieving nationhood.
Highlight of the event was Award Presentation to the Hon.Minister of State for Education,Chief Emeka Nwajiuba Esq. Executive Secretary, National Human Rights Commission,Mr Tony Ojukwu SAN and other deserving individuals who had sacrificed a lot educationally and distinguished themselves in various fields of human endeavour.(NAN)
