Armed ‘Cultists’ Terrorize Bayelsa Capital, Kill Governor’s Aide

PERSONS suspected to be cultists went on rampage in the Bayelsa State capital of Yenagoa on Monday morning, targeting a vehicle that was at the time conveying occupants who are professionally close to the state governor, Seriake Dickson.

Bearing sophisticated weapons, the attackers had arrived in a saloon car and blocked the path of the sport utility vehicle in which two men, identified simply as ‘British’ and ‘Orlando’, were traveling before turning their automatic assault rifles on them and killing them both.

The incident happened in an area where government buildings were present, including the newly erected State Assembly complex. Police personnel who arrived at the scene of the attack shortly afterwards, led by Mrs. Rita Grean of the Azikiro Police Station, were seen working on removing the bodies of the victims.

The attack caused considerable pandemonium as people present ran for safety.

Special adviser to Governor Dickson on Media and Public Affairs, Markson Oworiso-Daniel said his office was yet to be notified of the attack but that he would contact the police for details of the incident. The state public relations office, Mr. Fidelis Odumma however confirmed the incident, saying investigations were ongoing .
