* Italian Govt Condoles with Nigeria over Kano Explosions
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has condemned the Friday multiple attacks in Kano, which claimed the lives of many and left many injured.
In a message issued by his spokesperson, Martin Nesirky, on Saturday, Ki-Moon said he was “appalled at the frequency and intensity of recent attacks in Nigeria, which demonstrate a wanton and unacceptable disregard for human life.”
He expressed his solidarity with the government and people of Nigeria, and expressed his hope for swift and transparent investigation into the attacks to ensure perpetrators were brought to justice.
He also extended his sincere condolences to the people of Nigeria and to the bereaved families.
The Italian Government on Sunday joined other nations in condoling with Nigeria over Friday’s multiple explosions in Kano, which left scores of residents dead and several others injured.
A statement by the Italian Foreign Minister, Giulio Terzi, made available to news men in Abuja by that country’s embassy, described the explosions as “an horrendous crime,” perpetrated by members of the Boko Haram sect.
It noted that the development further stressed the need for the international community to increase the profile of its multilateral actions against extremism anywhere in the world.
The statement also emphasised the need for the universal principles of religious tolerance, co-existence and dialogue to be upheld.
It promised that as Nigeria’s major economic partner, Italy would continue to support the country in its actions to contain extremism, and prevent such attacks in future.
Mr William Hague, British Foreign Secretary, on Saturday condemned Friday’s bomb attack in Kano.
A statement from the Foreign and Commonwealth offices made available in London, said Hague also expressed condolences with the families of those killed and those injured in the attack.
“I am shocked and appalled by the large scale terrorist attacks in Kano, Nigeria, yesterday.
“The full horror of last night’s events is still unfolding, but we know that a great many people have died and many more have been injured,’’ the statement quotes Hague as saying.
It stated that the nature of these attacks had sickened people around the world.
“There is no place in today’s world for such barbaric acts and I condemn in the strongest possible terms those who carried them out,’’ the statement said.
It noted that the incidents underlined the importance of the international community standing together in the fight against terrorism in all its forms.
