By Mohammed Mohammed President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday pleaded with the country’s neighbours to bear with us on the closure of borders. He though expressed sympathy to Ghanaian President, Mr. Nana Akufo-Adodo, that Nigeria’s border closure was taking toll on his country’s economy. Mr. Femi Adesina, the Special Adviser to the president on Media and Publicity in a statement sent from the UK-African Investment Summit 2020, in London, said the reasons for the closure was not only for economic consideration but for the challenging security and inflow of hard drugs into Nigeria. Buhari said: “When most of the vehicles carrying rice and other goods into our borders are intercepted, you find hard drugs and small arms.” No doubt this has terrible consequences on us, the president asserted. According to him, the Sahel region bordering the West African subregion has been inundated with severe security challenges in recent times. He however said that a committee has been set up to critical look into the closure assuring that necessary step will be followed on the submission of their report, expressing happiness at the present status of the country’s farmers who have cashed in on the closure to meet the food needs of Nigerians.
