Lagos lawmakers have impeached Mudasiru Obasa as Speaker.
He was impeached on Monday during plenary.
Obasa’s impeachment was not a surprise to many political watchers..
Obasa was replaced by his deputy, lasbat meranda, who represents apapa constituency 1 and formerly served as the chief whip of the house.
The impeachment came days after the gazette reported that mr. obasa approved the withdrawal of n43.5 billion for backup vehicles for lawmakers, along with other controversial activities.
Sources indicate that mr. obasa was in atlanta when his impeachment took place.
Mr. obasa, 52, was first elected speaker on june 8, 2015, taking office alongside former governor akinwunmi ambode.
His tenure has been marked by repeated accusations of fraud and political thuggery. in 2020, the gazette published a series of investigations revealing how mr. obasa funneled lagos funds to his personal companies and bank accounts. sahara reporters also uncovered his assets across lagos.
He was invited for questioning by the efcc after the agency became alarmed by media reports of his mismanagement. he denied the allegations, and no charges were filed after his meeting with the detectives
