Nigerian militant group Niger Delta Avengers has that its ceasefire on attacks in the country’s southern oil-rich region has being called off end.
In a statement on Friday, Murdoch Agbinibo, the group’s spokesman, said the group would renew hostilities. The militant said the fresh attacks would be worse than those of 2016.
“We can assure you that every oil installation in our region will feel the warmth of the wrath of the Niger Delta Avengers,” the statement read.
Attacks on oil facilities in the Niger Delta in 2016 cut Nigeria’s oil production to its lowest level in at least 30 years and coupled with low oil prices, led to a crippling recession within the Nigerian economy.
Nigeria is a member of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries exempt for a multilateral agreement to trim production to balance an oversupplied market. Nigeria asked for exemption so it can steer oil revenue toward national security efforts.
