Governor of Borno state, Babagana Zulum has underscored the pivotal role of biotechnology in driving economic recovery and sustainable development in the region.
This is contained in a press statement issued by Abraham Isah, Public Relations Officer(PRO) of the Biotechnology Society of Nigeria(BSN) in Abuja on Thursday.
The Governor said this at the ongoing 36th International Conference of the Biotechnology Society of Nigeria(BSN), held in collaboration with the University of Maiduguri in Maiduguri.
Represented by Malam Bukar Tijani, Secretary to the State Government, Zulum emphasised the urgent need to harness the transformative power of biotechnology in addressing the multifaceted challenges facing Borno and Nigeria at large.
The Governor, who highlighted pressing socio-economic and environmental challenges confronting the state, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to leveraging biotechnology as a catalyst for positive change and inclusive growth.
“We recognize the immense potential of biotechnology in enhancing agricultural productivity, improving healthcare delivery, and promoting environmental sustainability,” he said.
He expressed optimism that through strategic investments in research and development, infrastructure, and human capital, his administration would strive to build a vibrant biotechnology ecosystem that fosters innovation, entrepreneurship, and inclusive growth.
Zulum also outlined several key initiatives undertaken by his administration to promote biotechnology innovation and adoption.
He mentioned these to include; establishment of research and development centers, partnerships with academic institutions and industry stakeholders, implementation of policies and regulatory frameworks, and investments in infrastructure development.
He said that harnessing the full potential of biotechnology required collective action and collaboration across sectors and stakeholders.
He called for collaborative efforts in advancing the frontiers of biotechnology for the greater good.
