‘Mansa Musa’ Prodigal Sons: Trajectory of Africa’s Historical Wealth and Modern Misery

By Taiwo Akerele In this article, Taiwo Akerele, argues that the African continent is too naturally endowed and potentially rich to be poor, too strong to be weak. He concludes that this is a challenge to current African leaders juxtaposed against the background of the pre-colonial Africa’s economy to be more productive than the 21st-century economy powered by technology and global competitiveness.  Participating at the just concluded African Network for Environmental and Economic Justices’ (ANEEJ) regional program on debt sustainability in partnership with AFRODAD Zimbabwe as a panelist and lead paper presenter at the Spring of 2021 presented an opportunity for me to join the league of the arguing group as to whether the present debt profile of African countries is sustainable and ...

The Arrest and Extradition of Fugitive Nnamdi Kanu to Continue the Prosecution for Charges for Which He Jumped Bail

Civilized people, all over the world, should detest violence and crime. Crimes and violence have the effect of setting mankind back to the "state of nature, where life will be nasty, brutish and short." Because man decided to stay in society, certain etiquettes were adopted on interpersonal and group relations in the society. The concept of statehood and governance emerged to prevent descent to the state of nature. The man was, therefore, expected to live within the bucket of civilized society, by observing societal norms and mores. However, there are social deviants who find it hard to live inside that bucket of civilized society. Therefore, the state uses the law and other instruments to deal with such deviance and to reward compliance. It is a truism thatthe state exists to prote...

RE: BETWEEN THE CALL FOR REFERENDUM AND RESTRUCTURING NIGERIA : MY REACTION TO SHITTU OBASSA’S POST ON THE ABOVE IN FACEBOOK

When recollecting history, Shittu Obassa said that the amalgamation of Southern Nigeria and Northern Nigeria took place in 1914. While this is true, it should be noted that it was not the only amalgamation in Nigeria's history. There was an earlier one which took place in 1906. That was when the Southern Protectorate and the Colony of Lagos were amalgamated by the British Colonial administration. Two years earlier, the British had concluded its conquest of the Sokoto Caliphate and brought all that territory that made up Northern Nigeria under British colonial rule. It would seem that the Decree(I refuse to call it agreement , because there is a great difference between the two ) , had a life's span of 100 years. It means that it would have expired by 2014. But between then and now, a ...

PMB’s Administration @Six: An Unpopular View

By Michael Stephens Exactly three years ago, President Muhammadu Buhari proclaimed June 12 as Democracy Day. It was his third year in office as President of Nigeria and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces. It was unparalleled and quite historic. None of his predecessors had done anything like that before. But he took the decision and stood by it with a presidential seal of approval. The man at the centre of the day itself, Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, often referred to as (MKO), had been consigned to the ashes of history except brief remembrances by human rights activists. With the presidential declaration, MKO had his stolen mandate returned, had been resurrected from the dead. Not only that, PMB also conferred the nation’s highest award Grand Commander of the Federal...

Entrepreneurship Education in Tertiary Institutions and Nigeria’s Unemployment Conundrum

By ISAAC OLUYI In 2006 or thereabout, entrepreneurship education was formally introduced by the government into Nigerian tertiary institutions. The introduction was no doubt greeted with a lot of hopes, optimism and high expectations. The reaction was not misplaced as Nigerians and even the government believed that exposing students to entrepreneurship education may stem the challenge of unemployment in the country. However, over a decade after the introduction of entrepreneurship education in the nation’s higher citadels of learning it seems the problem of unemployment is still being scratched on the surface. In fact, the conundrum of unemployment appears to have worsened! The recent statistics on unemployment released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) reveals that t...

By Franklin Alao The attention of the Management of the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) has been drawn to some write-ups, especially on Twitter and Instagram by some persons alleging extortion by the new Courier regulations. NIPOST Management was taken aback by this action given the level of engagements of all stakeholders within the postal services industry in Nigeria, particularly in recent times. The decision to step up engagement was aimed at ensuring that all stakeholders have the opportunity to have input in decision-making, understand why NIPOST is introducing new measures and to promote transparency in the sector. NIPOST Management was, therefore, surprised that some stakeholders chose to ignore the windows of opportunity for sharing their ideas or grievances with the...
