‘Government Must End Subsidizing with Borrowed Money’ – President Jonathan

No meaningful infrastructural development is possible in an environment where government depends on borrowed money to fund capital budget and subsidies.   Nigerian President Goodluck E. Jonathan made the declaration earlier on Friday during a meeting at the State House, Abuja, with a Special Adviser to United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon, Prof. Jeffrey Sachs.   Mr. Jonathan said that the deregulation of the petroleum sector is a necessary change Nigeria must make if government will have a significant impact in the lives of citizens.   According to president, the country’s 2010 capital budget was funded with borrowed money, the equivalent of which was used to fund the subsidy last year, adding that “no meaningful infrastructural development is possible in such an environment”.   P...

The passenger train that left Lagos for Ilorin on Friday was so overcrowded that many simply sat on the floor, while some others remained standing. NDLEA Lagos Command Lists Successes in 2011

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Lagos State Command, seized 10.6 tonnes of assorted hard drugs in 2011, its commander, Mr Aliyu Sule, said on Friday. Sule said in an interview in Lagos that the seizures were an increase on the 6.1 tonnes it made in 2010. (more…)

RTEAN Holds Rally in Support of Subsidy Removal

The Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) says it has scheduled Saturday for a peaceful rally nationwide in solidarity with the Federal Government over removal of petroleum subsidy. Alhaji Danlami Navom, the Secretary General of the Association, who disclosed this in an interview on Friday in Abuja, said the association had disassociated itself from other segments of the labour movement. A 36 year-old woman, Mrs Aishat Abubakar of Barnawa Area in Kaduna State, on Friday sued her guardian, Alhaji Shuaibu Tanko, for refusing to take her to her parent. Aisha told a Kaduna Sharia Court that Tanko and his wife, Fatima, were not her biological parents and efforts to convince them to take her to her real parents failed. (more…)
