IPOB Faithful Recounts Survival from Alleged Inhuman Treatment by Security Operatives and Family Ordeal

By Seun Adams One Jude Obinna Odirih, an indigene of Akwu-ukwu in Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State, has recounted the alleged persecution, torture, and attacks suffered by him and his family following a street march held on 23 November 2018. According to reports, Mr. Odirih stated that he was abducted on 25 November 2018 at approximately 7:45 p.m. by security operatives and taken to the former SARS detention facility in Awkuzu, Anambra State. He alleged that while in detention he was subjected to severe torture and brutal assaults, resulting in loss of consciousness. A woman’s experience with the cultural practice of female genital mutilation (FGM) in Edo State, Nigeria.

She explains that she is from Illeh in Ekpoma, Edo State, and married a man from Ujoelen, also in Ekpoma. In both communities, FGM is a deeply rooted cultural tradition. Women are typically mutilated as young girls or at the time of marriage. Those who are not mutilated are considered outcasts and not regarded as “whole women.” Her mother, who likely had a traumatic experience with FGM, hid her and her sister from their community to protect them from undergoing the practice. When she met her husband, he did not tell her that his community strictly enforced FGM. After their customary marriage in August 2012, she traveled to his hometown to meet his family.
