As Nigeria celebrates the National Children’s Day, the wife of the Executive Chairman Kuje Area Council, Hajiya Salamatu Abdullahi Suleiman Sabo, has donated educational materials to over 250 primary school pupils in Kuje to mark the 2022 Children’s Day.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the children comprises pupils from the less privileged, internally displaced,‘School without Walls’ and other vulnerable children drawn from various communities in kuje.
The children received school bags, lunch box, sandals, books, mathematical sets and food items at the women development center in Kuje.
Salamatu said that the event tagged: “Education for Development”, was to give the displaced and less privilege children a sense of belonging as part of marking the Children’s Day.
She also called on parents, community leaders, teachers and guardians to protect and uphold the constitutional rights of every child.
“The true essence of this day is to celebrate the significance of children in our communities because the values learned as a child are responsible for the kind of adults we have in the nation.
“As other children celebrate in the comfort of their homes, we have decided to give joy and significance to these ones that crisis forced out of their homes.
“Over 259 children are here today to eat, have fun, learn and go home with educational items,” she said.
She said there was need to educate young Nigerians, especially the vulnerable and less privileged to ensure a serene and evenly developed society for all.
Mrs Salamatu Sabo said it is a momentous day to celebrate the children and make them feel loved, especially after a challenging years with the COVID-19 pandemic and insecurity.
The First Lady further noted that even with the global economic challenges, rampant insecurity and inequalities growing due to the pandemic, no child’s right to life, education, parental care, survival, development, health services and dignity should be denied.
She therefore called on good spirited individuals, corporate bodies and civil society groups to help in promoting the ‘Education for Development’ programmes in the country.
NAN reports that activities of the day included debates, quiz, recitations and presentation of songs by the elated children, dance and fun fare with the first lady.
Children’s Day is observed on May 27 annually to honour children and minors. (NAN)
