Citing Electoral Laws, Nigeria’s Ruling PDP Spokesman, Oliseh Metuh, Resigns

OLISEH METUH, Nigeria’s Peoples Democratic Party’s national publicity secretary, resigned his position with the party

on Wednesday, a day after he denied reports (not by sharpedgenews.com) that he was resigning the same position.

Mr. Metuh’s resignation is the fallout of the official pronouncement of the Independent National Electoral Commission a few months ago, who declared the election that produced Metuh as the national publicity secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party failed to meet the stipulated requirements by the Commission.

According to the electoral commission said that the process which produced 12 of the 16-member committee violated paragraph 6.5 (1) of the guidelines for the conduct of the 2012 congresses and national convention, making the election of Metuh and other affected officials invalid.

According to Mr. Ibrahim Bawa acting director of legal affairs of the electoral Commission, “The mode of election adopted for single candidates was not in accordance with the mode of election stipulated in paragraph 6.5 (i) of the guidelines for the conduct of the year 2012 congresses and national convention and, therefore, not acceptable to the commission.”

The other national officials of the party affected by the order include Sam Sam Jaja, national organising secretary, Abubakar Mustapha, his deputy Okechukwu Nnadozie, deputy national publicity secretary, Binta Goje, national youth leader Garba Chiza, his deputy Dennis Alonge Niyi, deputy national auditor, Umar Ibrahim, national women leader, Kema Chikwe, her deputy, Hannatu Ulam, deputy national treasurer, Claudus Inengas and national legal adviser, Victor Kwon.

“The National Chairman is not going to resign; he is not only in office but in power,” Mr. Metuh said after announcing his resignation on Wednesday, although

“There is no controversy about his election, he is not in court. The INEC report did not say his election was flawed. He complied with the Constitution of the party and the guideline of the 2012 convention.”
