Community Development: Centre unveils “Not without my people” project

The Ubuntu Centre for Africa Peace Building and Development (UCAP) has unveiled its “Not Without my People” project to promote community development and empower people with various skills to make them self-reliant.

Prof. Oshita Oshita, Executive Director soma online eu of the centre, said at the unveiling ceremony in Abuja, that the project would kick-start at Ogoja, a Local Government Area in Cross River State.

Oshita said the project aims at empowering individuals and groups of people with the necessary skills they need to effect positive change within their communities.

He added that the concept of Not without my people is to reach those that have not been termed difficult to reach and change the face of rural communities in the country.

“I told myself that we must not leave our people behind.

“Those of us here in Abuja are privileged but look at the Ogoja which was one of the provincial headquarters in the old Nigeria but Ogoja has not changed much.

“Ogoja is connected to the national grid but we never get light, our roads are very bad and our people there are very poor.

“And we felt that this way of giving back to our people will be better than just visiting them and telling them story.

“We decided we focus there as the refugees that were affected by the Ambazonian conflict in the Cameroon and the people in the communities are struggling for the little that exists there, resulting to more conflicts coming up.

“So our mission is to settle there, give young people jobs, solve the conflicts, help to resolve them by creating peaceful coexistence and teach them how to live together,” he said.

He added that the centre had also established the first radio station in Ogoja, to promote peace building and effective peace communication.

He added that the centre would be training people on computer skills, sewing, among others to promote self reliance.
