Controversial 2nd Republic FEDECO Chairman, Ovie-Whiskey, Dead at 88

Former Chairman of defunct Federal Electoral Commission (FEDECO), Justice Victor Ovie-Whiskey, is dead.

His eldest son, Mr Anthony Ovie-Whiskey, who confirmed the incident, said the man died at 9.35a.m, on Wednesday, at Agbarho Clinic, in his home town, Agbarho, in Delta.

He said his late 88-year-old father suffered stroke and was hospitaliZed for two weeks before he died.

Ovie-Whiskey said the family had already informed the Delta Government of the demise of the former chief electoral officer of the country.

The late Ovie-Whiskey was a former Chief Judge of the defunct Bendel State before he was appointed Chairman of FEDECO in 1980 by former President Shehu Shagari.

The former Judge, who was born on April 6, 1924, attended Kings College, Lagos and later the University College, now University of Ibadan, before going abroad to study law at the University of London.

At the time President Shagari appointed him as FEDECO boss, he was the Chief Judge of Bendel State.

But the general elections, which he supervised in 1983 were marred by widespread irregularities and the electoral officials were accused of rigging the results in favour of the ruling National Party of Nigeria (NPN).
