The House of Representatives on Monday urged Nigerians not to misunderstand the lawmakers over the bill seeking to amend the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Act 2004
Rep. Zakari Mohammed (PDP-Kwara), the Chairman of the House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, stated this while briefing newsmen in Abuja.
A bill seeking to amend the EFCC Act on Oct. 26 scaled through second reading at the House of Representatives.
The bill proposed that the Chairman of the EFCC should be a serving or retired Justice of the Supreme Court or Court of Appeal.
The amendment was sponsored by Rep. Bassey Ewa (PDP-Cross River), the Chairman, House Committee on Gas Resources.
Mohammed told newsmen that the bill had gone through second reading, adding that anything could still happen during the on-going debate..
“ The House should not be misunderstood, it (EFCC bill) is an on-going debate.
“ The bill on the EFCC went through the second reading, so anything can still happen, the House has not concluded on it, it is an on-going debate; a conclusion has not been drawn yet,’’ he stressed.
He gave an assurance that the lawmakers would always enact laws that would tackle corruption in the country.
