In its continued aggressive drive to protect Nigerians in urban and rural communities from the dangers of substandard medicine and food, the National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) will establish desk offices in the 774 local government areas of the country.
“The local government desk offices, which are to be established in the 774 local government areas of the federation, are to partner with NAFDAC in maintaining the agency’s posture of zero tolerance to fake drugs and unwholesome products”, said Director-general of NAFDAC, Dr. Paul Orhii in Yenagoa, while speaking at the inauguration of Local Government desk officers for Bayelsa State.
The desk offices are expected to liaise with the Agency in maintaining its clamp down, not only on fake drugs but on illegal trade in regulated products.
“This they will do by assisting NAFDAC and providing information that will help the agency tackle the menace and eradication of drug hawking at the grass roots,”Orhii said.
The Director-General, who was represented by the zonal head, South-South, Mrs. Lilian Duru, stated that the agency was collaborating with local and international agencies in ensuring that its mandate was achieved.
He said that NAFDAC was currently restrategising in order to strengthen its existing structure in achieving its objectives of wiping out drug counterfeiting, faking and other related offences.
